The Secret to Successful Business Meetings

Business Meeting

Over the last few weeks I attended several real estate functions, conferences and classes.

Some here locally. Others out of state.

I enjoy meeting with other real estate agents and small business owners associated with the industry.

This is what I noticed.

Some folks are excited to be where they are.

Hugs are common when friends meet. Everyone is alert to the conversation.

There is a buzz of energy. You don’t want to leave, so dinner plans are made. The night is full of laughter and shared stories.

Other folks appear beaten down.

The atmosphere is heavy. The conversation seems forced.

Even social chit chat is at a minimum. Tick-tock. Tick-tock. You can’t wait to leave.

What makes the difference?

The real estate market is tough for those in both groups.

Is it the meeting agenda? The location? The people involved?

What do you think?

My goal is to attend and offer functions, conferences and classes where the energy is high.

What’s the secret? What made the last meeting you attended a success?
Let’s talk about it.

Twitter? Yes, Absolutely!

Yes, another piece on the use of Twitter.

The top story on Reddit today is a piece from a couple of days ago about the Boston Police department and its amusing Twitter response to a citizen’s humorous question.

The Boston Police tweet about incidents on the streets of Boston; one of their tweets is a wonderful example of building your brand. Read more.

Why Disconnecting Is a Good Thing

disconnected-headphonesWe’ve all been there. Struggling. Consumed with the stress in our life.

There’s no power. No energy for anyone or anything around us.

It’s all we can do to keep putting one foot ahead of the other.

And yet, we continue moving forward.

The never ending project ends. Black clouds over our heads lift. So do our spirits.

Piece by piece, one connection at a time, we plug in to life. And realize we’re not in the same place before the power disconnected.

Our lives have been changed.

The economic hardships real estate agents, builders, home inspectors — small business owners in every industry — experience are traumatic. Income levels have dropped 40%. Bank deposits for self-employed independent contractors (most real estate agents) are infrequent at best. Cash reserves have dwindled. It’s a fact. Times are tough. So, get over it already!

One of the first steps to reconnecting — moving from post-traumatic stress disorder to post-traumatic stress growth — is acceptance. I believe this is an inside job. No one can do this work for you.

A sign of acceptance is connecting to the world again. We begin to share the truth of our experience and discover we are not alone. By sharing, we offer hope to those still disconnected. By sharing, we feel alive once more. Our creativity is sparked. Energy levels rise. We discover ways to be productive and, in turn, profitable.

I’m ready to connect. Are you?
