Do You Know Stuff?

I Know Stuff I was visiting the website of a friend and noticed this image over on the right hand side of the page. “Questions? Ask Me, I Know Stuff,” it reads.

Non-threatening, doncha’ think? Perhaps even inviting? Approachable?

It got me to thinking (which I seem to do best in the middle of the night, it seems) about how approachable some folks are. How do other folks know it’s okay to ask them stuff?

Okay, in this case there’s a big, blue question mark telling viewers it is okay to ask. But, what about “in real life” — social networking speak for offline — situations?

My girlfriend and I have laughed for years about how people come up to us when we are traveling. “Where are the bathrooms?”, they ask. “Where do I buy tickets? How do I get there from here?” Amazingly, we always know the answer. How does that happen?

What do you think? How do you decide who to approach with your questions? What makes you think they know the answer?

What about you guys who get asked questions all the time? What sets you apart? How is it that you DO know the answers, even in unfamiliar circumstances?

Share your ideas in the comments. Then, let’s translate offline signals into online signals.

  • They really do ask me stuff. Sometimes it is about parking but that usually leads to an idea for a blog post. My blog is currently the only online source to information about permit parking and parking meters in St. Paul. . . cuz I know SRUFF
