When I was in school for a Master of Social Work degree, we talked about people being congruent.

Webster defines congruent as an adjective meaning agreeing; accordant; congruous.

In counseling and psychotherapy congruent means agreement between a person’s thoughts, feelings and actions.

If I am feeling crappy – physically, mentally, spiritually – and tell you I am “fine”, then I’m not congruent.

Congruent is what being authentic and transparent in social media means to me.

What does authentic mean to you? How ’bout transparent?

Authentic living is something I aspire to daily. When I get inauthentic (is that a word?) I get immediately backlash. Sometimes it can creep up before I realize it. Authentic living I think of as living true to my core, being me, following my own light. When I try to be something that I think I should be or what I think other people want me to be then my whole balance gets outta whack.

I often see people trying to be what they think they should be in their profession or as a parent or as a general person. It does not work. I do not feel that we can be truly happy until we accept who we are and find our path. Same with social media, the people that are doing it just to get business have it all wrong and frankly turn ‘real’ people off. Social media is not for everyone, nor should it be. To me transparency is letting your true self shine in all palces including via social media. It is not hiding behind a mask (or a logo or a suit).
